Child injuries are just part of being a kid. While we hope that most of the injuries that our children sustain only require a small bandage on a scraped knee, sometimes these injuries are severe and even deadly.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), injury is the number one cause of death in children and teens in the U.S. Children can be injured anywhere, including at school, while at summer or activities camps, on the playground, in foster homes, at home, at a neighbor’s house, and in a motor vehicle. They may also be injured when playing with toys, an unlocked gun, as a pedestrian, while riding their bicycle, playing with a dog, on an amusement park ride, and they can even be a victim of medical malpractice.

These are the six most common causes of accidents in children, according to The National Institutes of Health (NIH):

  1. Motor vehicle accidents-The number one injury-related cause of death in children is motor vehicle accidents, with 150 children visiting emergency rooms every hour for serious injuries from these accidents according to the NIH. The majority of these injuries occur because seatbelts and safety seats are either not used or are used/installed improperly.
  2. Suffocation-Suffocation can occur while a child is sleeping, eating, and even playing with their own toys. Infants are most likely to suffocate due to crib bedding, co-sleeping, and improper sleep positioning. For older children, choking on food, toy parts, balloons, and strangulation on window blinds is most common.
  3. Drowning-Drowning is the most common cause of death in children aged one to four, with three children dying each day according to the NIH. While most people worry about swimming pools, but children more commonly drown in their own bathroom or in other areas of the home with just small amounts of standing water.
  4. Poisoning-Each day, more than 300 children in the U.S. visit the emergency department due to poisoning, with two children dying daily. The most common poisoning culprits are household chemicals, cleaners, and medications that are left within reach of tiny hands. Medications and chemicals should be kept up high, behind childproof locks, and purses should also be kept medication free.
  5. Burns-Children are often burned by hot water, hot liquids, steam, and in the kitchen. Lighters and matches should be kept out of reach of children, pots and pans should have their handles turned towards the stove while cooking, locks should be used on stove knobs, and the water heater should have its temperature set at 120 degrees or lower to prevent second and third-degree burns.
  6. Falls-Falls are the most common cause of non-fatal injuries to children with about 8,000 children visiting the emergency department daily in the U.S. following a fall. Falls from changing tables, car seats falling from tables and counters, and falling from windows are the most common reasons smaller children are injured. For older children, falls from their bicycles and playground equipment are the most common causes of injuries.
