Each year, over 25,000 children are injured in traffic accidents in school zones and over 100 lose their lives. If your loved one has been injured or killed in a school zone as a pedestrian, speak with one of our experienced personal injury attorneys as soon as possible.

Distracted driving is a major factor in traffic accidents in school zones: nearly 70% of surveyed drivers have admitted to being distracted while driving, and, like intoxicated drivers, these drivers are at least three times more likely to cause an accident than those who are neither. According to the Illinois Vehicle Code, drivers in school zones must proceed as follows:

“On a school day when children are present and so close thereto that a potential hazard exists because of the close proximity of the motorized traffic and when the traffic control signals are not in place or not in operation, the driver of a vehicle shall stop and yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within a crosswalk when the pedestrian is upon the half of the roadway upon which the vehicle is traveling, or when the pedestrian is approaching so closely from the opposite half of the roadway as to be in danger” (625 ILCS 5/11-1002.5).

It’s also helpful to ensure that your children understand basic traffic laws and safety precautions, especially in your own neighborhood. Make sure they understand: where and how to cross the street safely, especially before or after school; to never act under the assumption that an oncoming driver can see them; and, to look out for other children to ensure that everyone exercises proper caution when crossing the street.
