The kitchen is often called the “heart of the home” and it is where we spend a large majority of our day. Unfortunately, the kitchen, with all of its’ hazards, is a dangerous room for small children. Some experts recommend keeping children out of the kitchen, but this can be difficult, especially when parents need to prepare meals and children want to be where the action is.

To help keep your child safe, experts recommend keeping them securely strapped into a highchair or playpen where they can still see what is going on. If your child will be allowed free-run of the kitchen, experts also recommend keeping a toy box or low drawer full of child-safe items to keep them occupied and amused.

To eliminate the most serious of kitchen dangers, it is recommended that parents and guardians take the following precautions as well:

  • Store all household chemicals in a high cabinet that locks. If you must store any chemical under the kitchen sink, invest in a strong child-proof lock and never store chemicals in a container that a child could see as a food container.
  • Keep all sharp utensils in a latched drawer and keep all sharp cutting appliances in a locked cabinet.
  • Unplug appliances when they are not in use and do not allow cords to dangle where a child could pull the appliance down on themselves.
  • Always turn pot and pan handles to the back of the stove so a child cannot reach up and grab a hot pot or pan.
  • When walking with hot liquids, or cooking with hot oil, make sure you know where your child is at all times to prevent a trip and burn incident.
  • Purchase an insulated oven that does not burn your child if they touch the oven door while you are cooking and never leave the oven door open.
  • If you have a gas oven, make sure knobs are turned firmly to the off position and use knob guards to prevent your child from turning them.
  • Keep matches and lighters away from all children.
  • Keep alcohol and spices out of reach of children.
  • Use childproof latches on appliances such as the refrigerator, oven, dishwasher and any cabinet or drawer that contains items that could be dangerous to a child.
  • Never heat baby bottles in the microwave oven because it often heats unevenly, causing burns.
  • Keep fire extinguishers in the kitchen and each floor of the home.
  • Do not use tablecloths or covers on counters that could be pulled down.
  • Do not use small magnets that could be swallowed or cause choking.
  • Keep the phone number for poison control within sight. If your child touches or ingests any chemicals, medications, or toxin, call poison control at 1-800-222-1222 immediately.

Children are curious by nature and the kitchen can be an exciting place. By following these safety tips, you can ensure that your children are kept safe while you spend time together in the busiest part of your home.
