A fractured vertebra is when one of the bones in the vertebrae breaks due to some strong force, such as a car crash, a sports injury, or a harsh fall. There are 33 individual bones in the spinal column which allow us to keep an upright position, act as support for our head and neck, and they are also an essential component to the central nervous system (CNS). The CNS sends messages through the spinal cord to and away from the brain in order to carry out a countless amount of everyday functions from sensory processing to motor skills, so an injury to the surrounding area can cause extensive damage.

The symptoms of a fractured vertebra depend on the location of the injury, the extent of the injury, and the severity of the injury. It also may depend on the type of fracture, which could be a compression, flexion, or some other type of fracture. However, some of the most common symptoms which apply to some extent to all vertebral fractures include the following:

  • Pain while walking that may subside when you lie down
  • Discomfort and/or pain when sleeping
  • Limited spinal mobility
  • Height loss
  • Pain when lifting somewhat heavy objects, bending, or stretching
  • Digestive issues, such as constipation, due to the pressure on the stomach
  • Difficulty breathing

If you experience any of the following symptoms following an accident, you should seek medical attention immediately. Even if you do not feel these right away, you should still seek medical attention since doing so can catch an injury early before it worsens. Some conditions also have a delayed onset of symptoms, so it is important that you get to a doctor before you cause any further damage due to the lack of feeling any symptoms.

If another person caused your injuries, you can file a claim against them for monetary damages. Medical care for a fractured vertebra is not cheap, and it certainly is not cheap when it involves potential complications that you may have had to deal with.
