Due to inexperience, teen drivers can be prone to driving mistakes which poses driving hazards for the drivers and others on the road. To incentivize teens and other young drivers, there are multiple discounts for good drivers in the State of Illinois. Aside from maintaining a safe road for everyone, fostering safe driving tips to teenagers will prevent them from getting into dangerous driving practices common nowadays.

Here are tips for safe driving for teenage drivers:
  • Always wear your seatbelt. The 2018 Illinois Crash Facts showed that 189 and 69 fatal injuries were attributed to drivers and passengers not wearing seatbelts. Seatbelts save lives so remember to buckle in before driving.
  • Don’t drink and drive. Data shows that 60% of teenagers involved in vehicle accidents have been drinking. Additionally, 1,028 people died of alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes in 2018.
  • Stay focused on your driving. Keep your eyes on the road, your hands on the wheel, and your mind on driving. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that about 9 people die and a thousand others are injured due to distracted driving.
  • Stay alert. Check cars to your sides and the back. Look and listen attentively while on the road. Your driving may not cause an accident but you can’t say the same for others on the road.
  • Practice your driving. There’s no guarantee of 100% road safety when driving, but practicing may help you lower the hazards in case you meet them. You may get driving lessons from a family member on top of the mandatory driver education course in Illinois to ensure you’re well-equipped to face conventional and emergency situations.
