Over 4.5 million dog bites occur per year in the United States, according to recent estimates. Each year in May, the city of Buffalo Grove observes a “National Dog Bite Prevention Week” to help raise public awareness of the problem, and Buffalo Grove also enacts and enforces its own ordinances (in addition to state law) regarding dog ownership and responsibilities. Here are some of Buffalo Grove’s Title VI, Chapter 6 ordinances regarding dog ownership:

  • A license must be purchased by the owner of any dog four months or older within village-limits, and license tags are not transferable between pets (Section 6.1 2.020);
  • All dogs must receive the rabies vaccination, which must last one to three years, from a licensed veterinarian (Section 6.12 .010);
  • Dog owners must keep their dogs leashed when on sidewalks and public streets, walkways, parks, and other areas at all times (Section 6.1 2.070);
  • All owners of pit bull terriers and Rottweilers must install a “special enclosure” or closed fence within one year of the date the dog’s license was obtained. Keeping these breeds leashed when off the owner’s premises is strictly enforced, and they may only leave the premises when leashed and controlled by the owner or a family member 16 years or older (Section 6.1 2.125);
  • If a dog bites a person, the owner will receive instructions from the Buffalo Grove Police Department regarding the “Cook County Rabies/Animal Control Ordinance” (Section 6.1 2.110).
