For many people, a bad day at work is being yelled at by your boss or missing an important deadline. However, for other workers, a bad day can involve serious injuries, or worse. In 2018, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that there were 5,250 worker deaths or 3.5 deaths per 100,000 workers. This is an increase from 2017.

According to the BLS, the Top 10 most dangerous jobs in the world include the following:
  • Logging workers – 135.9 deaths per 100,000 workers (91 fatalities a year)
  • Fishers and related fishing workers – 86 deaths per 100,000 workers
  • Aircraft pilots and flight engineers – 55.5 deaths per 100,000 workers (75 fatalities a year)
  • Roofers – 48.6 deaths per 100,000 workers (100 fatalities a year)
  • Trash and recycling collectors – 34.1 deaths per 100,000 workers
  • Iron and steel workers – 25.1 deaths per 100,000 workers
  • Truck and sales drivers – 24.7 deaths per 100,000 workers (918 fatalities a year)
  • Farmers, ranchers, and other agricultural managers – 23.1 deaths per 100,000 workers
  • First-line supervisors of construction trades and extraction workers – 18 deaths per 100,000 workers (134 fatalities a year)
  • Grounds maintenance workers – 17.4 deaths per 100,000 workers
