A back injury is a general term encompassing many different types of damage or trauma to the connective tissues of the back, including bones, muscles, tissues, tendons, ligaments, and more. They can be caused by physical exertion, a fall, a sudden movement causing stress to the back, sports, automobile accidents, and more.

The lower back region is called the lumbar region. Lower back pain is very common in adults, but it can be debilitating when it is brought on by a traumatic accident such as an automobile accident. Some common traumatic causes of lower back pain include the following back injuries:

  • Herniated disc – A herniated disc is when the soft, inner cartilage of the intervertebral discs protrudes through the tough cartilage. This can put pressure on the surrounding nerves and cause intense pain.
  • Sciatica – This injury is when a herniated disc puts pressure on the sciatic nerve which connects your spine to your legs. This pressure can cause a tingling or burning sensation in the back, legs, and feet.
  • Back strain or sprains – A strain is caused when tendons, which connect muscle to bone, are overstretched or torn. A sprain is caused when ligaments, which connect bones to joints, are overstretched or torn.
  • Lumbar fracture – This occurs when a severe trauma causes one or more of the vertebral bones in the lumbar region to break or shatter.

If an accident caused one of these injuries, you may experience some lower back pain. This can be diagnosed with a physical examination where the doctor will test reflexes and ask about the location and feeling of your pain. An X-ray test could help diagnose a fracture, while a CT scan or MRI scan can help diagnose the other causes of your back pain by providing an image of the damaged connective tissues.

If another person caused your injuries, you can file a claim against them for monetary damages. Medical care for a back injury is not cheap, and it certainly is not cheap when it involves potential complications that you may have had to deal with.
