Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage
Motorcycle accidents can be devastating and have long-term or life-threatening consequences. If you have been injured in such an accident, your primary concern is your health and recovery; the last thing you want to hear is that your insurance coverage is insufficient to cover the repairs for your vehicle, which may result in further out-of-pocket costs in addition to medical bills. To ensure that you never find yourself in this situation, collision coverage (as part of your insurance policy) may cover the damages.
When considering this coverage, however, be mindful of the deductibles you select. If your own insurance is used for property damage, for example, the deductible will be taken from the reimbursement check provided to cover the damage. If your motorcycle has custom parts such as chrome accessories or customized plates, it may be good to cover them with “custom accessories” or “option equipment” coverage.
Health insurance coverage alone will not compensate an injury victim for lost earnings, emotional distress, or loss of ability to earn in the future. This may be disconcerting if you are ever in a motorcycle accident with a driver who has little or no bodily injury insurance coverage, but there is, of course, a way to ensure you are protected: if you have “uninsured/underinsured motorist” coverage, you will be covered if you suffer an injury and your damages may be considered by a jury should your case go to trial. This coverage also applies to victims of hit-and-run accidents.
Although some motorcyclists may believe that having health insurance coverage means they do not need UM coverage, health insurance policies alone are often insufficient for those who have been in accidents. In addition to medical costs, injured motorcyclists must also deal with pain and suffering, emotional distress, lost wages, and so on, for which they may make claims with their UM carriers (when the at-fault driver in the accident lacked sufficient insurance coverage).
Also, individuals who have more than one vehicle (including cars and motorcycles) through one insurance carrier may benefit from “stacked UM” coverage; this is a relatively inexpensive method of multiplying your coverage’s limits by the number of vehicles under the policy.
