The Illinois Secretary of State’s Office reported that in 2018, the state had a total of 11,704,038 registered motor vehicles and 9,186,641 registered drivers. With this number of vehicles driving daily, accidents may happen even with the best precautions in place; hence, the need for complete auto insurance coverage.

In addition to liability coverage, the State of Illinois also requires an Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury Insurance (UIM). This coverage is for drivers at fault with limited or insufficient insurance to cover your medical bills. Specifically, the UIM will cover the difference between your limits and the underinsured driver’s coverage, provided that the at-fault driver’s limits is lower than your UIM coverage. Additionally, Illinois State Law requires this insurance when you avail higher Uninsured Motorist (UM) Bodily Injury Coverage.

The Illinois Insurance Code can be overwhelming so reading is your best bet in meeting the state requirements. Start with knowing the basics like who needs auto insurance or what the required auto insurance coverages are. This should help you navigate through the driving laws in a breeze.
