Traffic Accident Injuries
Traffic accidents can be deadly for everyone, but nobody is more vulnerable than small children. While car seats and restraints can help protect even the smallest passenger, unfortunately, these safety methods aren’t always enough to prevent serious injuries in a traffic accident.

Children Traffic Accident Statistics
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), traffic accidents are the leading cause of death for children aged 3-14. In 2017, 677 (72%) of these deaths occurred to children who were passengers in motor vehicles, 170 deaths (18%) occurred to children who were pedestrians, and 31 (3%) children were killed by a motor vehicle while they were riding their bicycles.
While the use of restraints in motor vehicles has increased and improved, the NHTSA data shows the following:
- 218 (32%) child deaths were due to children being unrestrained
- Child safety seats reduce the likelihood of a fatality by 71% for infants and 54% for toddlers
- The use of a proper safety seat and restraints decrease serious injuries and fatalities by more than 50%
Types of Traffic Accident Injuries
According to the Department of Transportation (DOT), the most common traffic accident injuries to children aged 0-7 years old are to the head and neck. In fact, the younger the child, the more likely they are to suffer an injury to the head. These types of injuries can not only affect a child in the short term, but traumatic brain injuries can significantly impact a child for the rest of their lives.
Other common traffic accident injuries include:
- Abdominal injuries
- Thorax injuries
- Spinal injuries
- Injuries to the lower extremities
- Fractures
If your child was injured in a traffic accident due to the negligence of another person it is important that the negligent party be held responsible for the damages and injuries they caused and the complications your child may have in the future. An experienced personal injury lawyer can review your case and determine who may be responsible and what compensation your child may be entitled to.
