According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), traffic accidents are the leading cause of death for children aged 3-14. In 2017, 677 (72%) of these deaths occurred to children who were passengers in motor vehicles, 170 deaths (18%) occurred to children who were pedestrians, and 31 (3%) children were killed by a motor vehicle while they were riding their bicycles.
