According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), cyclists face a higher risk of crash-related injuries and death than motor vehicle drivers. With the risk of being involved in a bicycle accident so high, it is unfortunate that most cyclists will be involved in an accident at some point in their cycling life. It is important to know the steps you should take after a bicycle accident before that accident occurs.

If you or a loved one was involved in a bicycle accident, here are the seven important steps you should take immediately after your accident:

  1. Stay at the scene – Never leave the scene of an accident, even as a cyclist you could be cited for hit-and-run if you leave.
  2. Check for injuries – As a cyclist you have a distinct disadvantage when it comes to protection from injuries. Following an accident, evaluate yourself for any injuries and call 911 if your injuries are serious. Remember, even if you don’t feel like you are hurt, many accident injuries appear later. And, make sure you keep all documentation for your treatments, those will be important when it comes to your accident claim.
  3. Call the police – One of the best pieces of evidence you will have in an accident claim is a police report, especially when an insurance company is denying fault.
  4. Exchange information – No matter what type of accident you’re involved in, you should exchange information with the other driver or drivers. Make sure you get their name, phone number, license and insurance information, and if you can, a picture of their license plate. If there were witnesses, get their contact information as well.
  5. Take pictures – Pictures of the accident scene, your bicycle, the driver’s vehicle, road signs, and your injuries will go a long way in providing evidence for your accident claim. Documenting as much evidence as possible immediately after the accident will also help when your memory gets less reliable as time goes on.
  6. Inform your insurance company – If the driver had no insurance or you were involved in a hit-and-run accident, your insurance company should partially cover your medical bills under your uninsured motorist coverage.
  7. Call a personal injury lawyer – If you or a loved one has been involved in a bicycle accident, you may have trouble receiving compensation from your own insurance company or the at-fault driver’s insurance company. An experienced personal injury lawyer can review your case and help get you the compensation you deserve.
