An IDOT plow truck driver was killed Friday night in Stark County. The Department of Transportation confirmed that Michael Holmes, 49, of Wyoming, Illinois, was killed early morning on Route 17 outside of Toulon.

Holmes was plowing Route 17 when he stopped to help a motorist. He was outside of the plow truck when another vehicle lost control, hitting the truck and Holmes.

Holmes was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead shortly before 10:30 am. According to the DOT, Holmes was a monthly snowbird driver who had worked with winter operations since 2007.

Illinois Transportation Secretary Ann L. Schneider released a statement on Facebook reading, in part, “We are deeply saddened by a tragic accident this morning that claimed the life of one of our Illinois Department of Transportation employees.”

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn ordered flags be flown at half staff at all public buildings to honor Holmes’ sacrifice.
