Semi Trucks Burst Into Flames Following Crash on I-55
A crash involving two semi-trucks and a personal car closed I-55 close to southwest suburban Channahon for about 8 hours Tuesday, October 1st. The accident occurred at around 6:20 am in the southbound lanes of Interstate 55 in a construction zone south of Route 6 close to Channahon, according to a release from the Illinois State Police.
The fiery crash happened when a 2014 Freightliner semi truck failed to stop and hit the back of a 1999 Kenworth semi truck, according to police. The Kenworth truck, driven by a 48-year-old man from Joliet, was forced forward, when it struck a 1995 Ford Taurus driven by a 41-year-old Joliet man.
No one was injured in the accident and none of the vehicles had passengers, according to police. The Freightliner was loaded with paper and caught fire shortly after all of the drivers involved made it out of their vehicles. The Freightliner was driven by a 66-year-old man from Green Bay, Wisconsin, who was ticketed for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
The Channon Fire Department sent crews to put out the fire at the scene of the accident by 8:15 am, by the truck was still smoldering for hours. The accident forced the I-55 closed for nearly 8 hours while crews investigated the accident and cleaned up wreckage.
