Preventing Sports Injuries
More children are competing in sports than ever before. Sports help children to stay fit and feel good about themselves, although more time on the field means a greater risk of experiencing sports-related injuries. If your child participates in sports, there are things you can do as a parent to minimize their chances of being injured and keep them safe, which includes:
- Take time off-Children should take at least one day off a week and one month off a year from training to allow the body to recover.
- Get a preseason physical-Before starting any sport, your child should receive a preseason physical to ensure that they are fit and healthy enough to play in their chosen sport.
- Wear the right gear-Players should always wear the proper fitting gear for their sport including pads, mouthpieces, protective cups, and eyewear.
- Play safe-Children should play by all the rules and coaches and refs should enforce these rules.
- Encourage cross-training-Changing up workouts helps to take the stress off of joints and muscles that are used repeatedly in a single sport or activity.
- Stress the importance of warming up, flexibility, and stretching-Stretching is an important part of any physical activity and should be practiced before after each workout and game.
- Follow a healthy, balanced diet-Athletes should eat a diet full of vegetables, fruits, and lean protein with regular meals.
- Emphasize hydration-Heat-related illness is a huge problem for athletes. Ensure that your child drinks plenty of fluids before, during, and after working out or a game, that they wear lighter clothing during the hotter months, and that they stop working out when heat and humidity are high.
- Watch for sports-related emotional distress-Often, coaches and parents put so much pressure on their athletes to win that a child may keep playing long after the sport lost its fun.
- Do not play through pain-Encourage your child to talk with you when they feel that something is “off”. Playing through the pain can cause a mild injury to progress and if anything seems different, your child should see their doctor, especially if the following symptoms are present:
- Consistent pain during or after sports;
- Persistent or new swelling around a joint;
- Joints that give away;
- Painful joint popping;
- Pain that does not respond to a period of rest.
Sports should be fun and healthy for everyone involved. Unfortunately, sports injuries are part of these activities, but if you follow some of these basic tips, you and your child can prevent sports injuries from occurring.
