Pool Safety
Warmer weather means more time spent outdoors and more time cooling off in the pool. Whether you own a pool, you’re visiting friends or family that own a pool, or you’re spending time at a public pool, there are certain precautions that should be taken to ensure that everyone-particularly children-is kept safe around the water.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), drowning is the number one cause of death for children aged one (1) to four (4). The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates that almost 400 deaths occur yearly in swimming pools, with an average of 4,900 people receiving emergency care for injuries sustained at swimming pools or spas. To keep your children safe while swimming, it is recommended that you follow these pool safety tips:
- Always supervise your children while they are in, near, or around a pool or spa and ensure that proper adult supervision is present when you cannot be.
- Enroll children in swimming lessons, take swimming lessons with them if you are not strong in the water, and learn how to perform CPR for both children and adults. Make sure to keep those skills current.
- If your child goes missing, check the pool or spa first.
- Never rely on water wings or pool noodles to keep your child safe in the water. If your child cannot swim, fit them with an appropriately sized and approved PFD (personal floatation device).
- Make sure any pool or spa that you visit has compliant drain covers.
- Do not allow children to play around drains, pipes, or other pool openings to avoid entrapment.
- Keep a cellphone, scissors, first aid kit, and PFD near the pool when it is being used.
- A spa should have a lockable safety cover installed and a pool should have a four-foot minimum fence around its perimeter.
- Pool gates should have self-locking and self-closing gates and all pools should have pool alarms in various areas around the pool and fence.
- If a house serves as a fourth wall around a pool, the house doors and windows should have alarms installed for added protection.
- Keep the pool, spa, fencing, covers, and alarms all in good working order.
- If neighbors have a pool or spa, discuss the safety measures they have in place and instruct children never to attempt to use the pool or spa without permission or adult supervision.
Any time a child is around any body of water, accidents can happen. But, following these pool safety tips will help ensure that their summer stays fun, carefree, and safe.
