What is a plate glass injury?

A plate glass injury, or a non-tempered glass injury, can be incredibly severe and inflict major wounds on the victim. Safety glass, on the other hand, is glass that has been tempered to make it stronger by using various treatments in the initial glass-making process. Tempered glass is less likely to shatter, but if it does, it will shatter into many miniscule pieces and is less likely to cause injury. Non-tempered glass will break into much fewer, larger pieces, and is much more likely to cause injury due to its large and jagged edges.

What types of injuries can come from a plate glass injury?

Due to the sharpness, weight, and size of plate glass when it is shattered, people can suffer from fairly severe injuries. This includes deep lacerations anywhere on the body, a concussion, fractured bones, bruises, cuts, scrapes, permanent scarring, infections from open wounds caused by glass cuts, and in serious cases, even death. You deserve compensation for the losses that resulted from your injuries that were not your fault.

Who can I sue?

Federal regulations have been enacted to ensure that property owners actually adhere to only using safety glass for the safety of consumers and residents. Property owners should be taking any and all necessary precautions when designing their property or building to prevent an accident like this from happening. When you have been injured by non-tempered, plate glass on someone else’s property, you may consider filing a premises liability lawsuit against the property owner. Depending on the circumstances, you may be able to sue the glass manufacturer if they did not live up to their standards, as well.
