Slippery roads led to several accidents along Interstate 255 near Wood River on Thursday. Wood River Police responded to a single-car accident near Illinois Route 11 at 8:20 am after a vehicle slid off the roadway and down an embankment. The vehicle’s door became stuck but the fire department was able to get it open, using ropes to get the three occupants out of the car.

All three were treated at the scene, and none of the injuries were life-threatening. Roxana Police responded to two accidents on I-255. The first involved a Ford Ranger heading northbound near Illinois Route 143. The driver lost control of the vehicle and left the road, hitting a guard rail before spinning and crashing into the guard rail again. The driver was not injured.

Another vehicle driving behind the Ranger attempted to stop but lost control, hitting the same guard rail. The driver received treatment at the scene and was taken to the hospital by a family member.

Shortly after this accident, police responded to a crash near the New Poag Road exit. The driver of an SUV lost control on the overpass, hitting a concrete barrier, sliding across the road, and hitting a guard rail before stopping partially off the road. As traffic slowed to avoid the SUV, a second accident occurred when a driver failed to reduce speed and rear-ended another vehicle.
