Livestock Handling
The handling of livestock is an essential part of farm/agricultural work and, due to its inherent nature, all workers must follow the proper safety precautions and employers must do what is necessary to mitigate safety risks and the injuries which can result.
Here are some safety tips courtesy of the National Farmers Union (NFU) for safe livestock handling:
- Guide cattle gently. Cattle have a herding instinct and will obey their “leader,” but striking or yelling is not necessary. A simple nudge is often sufficient.
- Cattle can see all around and only have blind-spots directly behind and underneath them. Keep in mind that they can be distracted by motions at their sides, as well as shadows below when guiding them.
- Cattle’s “flight zone” – their physical zone of comfort – ranges from 5 to 25 feet. It can increase when they are excited and decrease when they move in single-file. They typically move most efficiently when the handler stays at the flight zone’s edge.
- Simply put, bulls cannot be trusted, and agricultural workers should always exercise extreme caution and understand the escape-route when working with a bull within a pen.
