Fatal Train Wreck Preventable
An investigation by the National Transportation Safety Bureau has determined that last year’s fatal train wreck near Guymon, Oklahoma was preventable. The accident happened on June 24, 2012; an east bound and west bound train traveling on the same line crashed head-on, killing three crew members and causing $15 million in damage. At a February, 2013 NTSB investigation hearing in Washington, officials announced that if the safety function called positive train control had been used, the crash would not have happened. The agency will also investigate how human error, in the Union Pacific and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen’s operations, may have contributed to the accident. Another hearing is planned for later in February.
