Substantial evidence is the key to proving negligence in an auto accident and earning full compensation for your injuries and losses. If you are in the appropriate physical condition to remain at the scene following an accident, here are some important steps you can take to gather evidence:

– Collect contact information from anyone involved in the accident, including license plate numbers and other relevant information about the vehicles involved.
– Collect contact information from any witnesses who clearly saw the accident.
– Provide your version of events to the police, but without admitting fault on your part.
– Take photos of the vehicles involved in the accident before they leave the scene, including all points of impact and damage as well as any pre-existing damage.
– Take photos of the road and surrounding area, including tire marks, any hazards in the road, and other conditions which may have contributed to the accident.
– Take photos of any debris in the road resulting from the accident. In some cases, the ways that parts fall off of cars can assist accident-reconstruction experts in their analyses and reconstruction of what happened.
– Look around to see if any video cameras or surveillance equipment may have recorded the accident; video footage is certainly one of the most rock-solid forms of evidence available.
– Anything else that you believe may have contributed to the accident is worth noting.

If an accident results in serious injuries, law enforcement officials may conduct an investigation of their own. The evidence is unlikely to be as thorough, however, so you should never rely solely on a police investigation as evidence for your case.

If you’ve been seriously injured, you may be unable to remain at the scene of the accident due to an immediate need for medical attention. In such a case, it is highly recommended to have a friend or loved one return to the scene for you to gather this evidence before the scene is cleaned up; it will be crucial for your injury claim and pursuit of compensation.
