It is estimated that about 62% of women in the U.S. use birth control in some form. Unfortunately, despite its many forms and brands, not all of them are guaranteed to be safe for use; some have been known to cause serious side-effects and even injuries, and many lawsuits have been filed by birth control users against medical manufacturers in recent years.
Yaz/Yasmin

Yaz and Yasmin are daily birth control pills which are produced by Bayer; in addition to preventing pregnancy, they also treat acne and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Teva Pharmaceuticals manufactures Ocella, the generic version of Yaz/Yasmin, which is supposed to provide the same benefits; however, women who have taken any of these three have reported many dangerous side-effects and conditions, including but not limited to:

  • Blood clots
  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • Gallbladder disease
  • High cholesterol/blood pressure
  • Liver cancer
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke

More recent lawsuits assert that Bayer minimized and concealed the risks of serious side-effects of Yaz and Yazmin while exaggerating their effectiveness. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) even issued Bayer a warning regarding failure to adequately warn users of risks in its advertisements.

Mirena IUD

Mirena, an intrauterine device (IUD), prevents pregnancy by being inserted into the uterus for a period of time up to five years. Since it was first approved by the FDA for U.S. sale in 2000, over 45,000 complaints have been filed regarding injuries sustained by its users, including:

  • Device expulsion
  • Device migration from the uterus to abdomen, requiring surgical removal
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Infertility
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
  • Penetration/perforation of the uterine wall
  • Vaginal hemorrhage

NuvaRing
This is a contraceptive vaginal ring which is marketed for its convenience, as it only needs to be changed once per month. Legal claims against its manufacturer, Merck & Co, are in the thousands for its serious side-effects and increased risks for complications, including:

  • Eye problems
  • Chest pain
  • Heart attack
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Stroke
  • Venous thromboembolic events (VTEs), particularly blood clots in the legs and lungs
  • Death

I have been on generic seasonale for abour 10 years. I have experienced a wide range of adverse effects but the most serious one was a large hepatic adenoma. I had to have a few segments of my liver removed along with my gallbladder. This has exacerbated my mental health and I have to take off work and be on short term disability. I have reached out to several firms, and am wondering if anything can be done to help.
