Chicago is the most populous city in Illinois and the third most populous city in the country. This bustling metropolis along the shoreline of Lake Michigan is home to almost three million residents, with the city stretching roughly 235 square miles. A few of Chicago’s notable attractions include going to Wrigley Field to see a Cubs game, seeing the Willis Tower, which is the tallest building in the Western hemisphere, or visiting Lincoln Park Zoo, which is one of the nation’s oldest zoos. The city has over 52 million people visiting Chicago annually, so it is a popular destination for outsiders as well as being very crowded essentially year-round.

Here is an example of a wrongful death lawsuit in the Bloomington area in recent years:

  • In July 2019, the family of a woman who died under the care of Swedish Covenant Hospital filed a wrongful death lawsuit against them. They claim that the hospital’s negligence and failure to follow the standard of care led to her death. She came to the hospital complaining of shortness of breath and high blood sugar levels, and died soon after. The family claims that the hospital neglected to identify the issue and treat it properly and timely. They were awarded $1,950,000 in damages.
  • In July of 2019, a wrongful death lawsuit was filed against Mercy Hospital and Chicago Police Department when a man was misidentified and taken off of life support by the wrong family. The family who identified the badly beaten and facially disfigured man was unsure if it was their family member, but were dismissed by the hospital as being “in denial”. They still took this man off of life support as requested, and later it was found that it was someone else’s family member. In this case, the family of the man who it really was and the man who actually took him off of life support are suing the hospital and CPD, both seeking upwards of $50,000 in damages.
