Champaign, a bustling and vibrant city located 135 miles south of Chicago, is the tenth-most populated city in Illinois. Home to Parkland College and the University of Illinois, Champaign also houses the offices of major companies such as Sony, State Farm, and Caterpillar and is also the home of University Research Park, located in Southern Champaign, where many technology and software companies are busy researching and developing new technologies. Champaign will continue to experience population growth with its blend of education, technology, research, healthcare, and business.

Cities, towns, and communities throughout Illinois enact and enforce their own ordinances (in addition to state law) regarding dog ownership and responsibilities. Here are some of Champaign’s ordinances for dog ownership:

  • No animal may disturb the peace and quiet of a neighborhood by barking or making any other unusual noise (Sec. 7-10);
  • No dog shall run at large on any property other than that of the owner unless restrained by a leash or other means (Sec. 7-12);
  • It is the duty of all owners of any dog kept within the city limits to have their dog vaccinated against the Rabies virus in compliance with the State Animal Control Act and each dog must be properly tagged as vaccinated (Sec.7-51);
  • No person shall keep a dangerous animal, including dogs, within the City limits and said animals will be seized and impounded; if a dog is deemed not vicious, they shall be returned to the owner but if they are deemed vicious, they will be destroyed (Sec. 7-7).
