Boom trucks, sometimes also called cherry pickers or bucket trucks depending on their capabilities, typically have a rotating telescopic-boom crane mounted on a commercial truck chassis. In most cases, a bucket attachment is located at the end of the extendable arm, however, boom trucks may also have a crane for heavy lifting, a pipe for pumping concrete or other materials, or mini buckets for moving employees to height in warehouses and larger stores.

While boom trucks are a common, and necessary, piece of equipment in a variety of industries, they can also be dangerous when an employee is not properly trained in the safe use of such heavy machinery.

Common Types of Boom Truck Accidents

Under the Federal agency, OSHA, or the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, all boom truck operators are required to be properly trained and certified to use these dangerous pieces of equipment, including proper operation, how to inspect the boom truck, how to anticipate potential hazards, and how to deal with these hazards in a safe manner. If an employee is not trained, accidents can occur, most of which are severe, and many can be deadly.

The most common types of boom truck accidents include:
  • Electrocution
  • Hydraulic power failure
  • Brake failure
  • Overturned boom truck
  • Falls
  • Striking an object/bystander
  • Motor vehicle accidents

Employers who fail to ensure that their employees are trained may be held liable for the dangerous conditions they created. In addition, if a boom truck or it’s parts are defective in design or manufacturing, the designer, manufacturer, and/or anyone involved in the chain of distribution of the defective equipment could be held liable for the damages their product caused.

If you or a loved one has suffered injuries due to negligence on the job site or a defective product, an experienced personal injury lawyer can review your claim and determine if there were unsafe working conditions, potential OSHA violations, and other hazards that may have existed at the time of your accident. They will also determine who may be liable for your injuries and damages and what compensation you may be entitled to.
