Birth Asphyxia and Medical Malpractice
“Birth asphyxia” is a condition in which a baby is deprived of oxygen either during or following birth. It can cause lifelong disabilities or even death, as well as two types of chemical changes in the baby: hypoxemia, which is a lack of oxygen in the blood; and acidosis, an excess of acid in the blood.
Birth asphyxia has a variety of causes, and some of these involve the negligence of a health care professional. Lowered respiration after an epidural or anesthesia can harm the baby’s oxygen supply; low oxygen levels in the mother’s blood can affect the baby during birth; and obstructed umbilical cords and sudden drops in blood pressure before or during birth are also risk factors. Low heart rate and blood pressure are strong indicators of asphyxia in a newborn baby, and severe brain damage can result if they are not addressed immediately. It can also lead to cerebral palsy and other physical and psychological debilitations which may be long-term or permanent.
This is indeed a heartbreaking situation for parents, and the baby’s health and well-being is undoubtedly the top priority.
