Asbestos Exposure Related Industries
Asbestos related diseases primarily affect people who were exposed to asbestos as an occupational hazard. Navy ships housed many asbestos filled products, and, as a consequence, US Navy veterans are at high risk for asbestos-related diseases. Mesothelioma and other nasty diseases caused by asbestos exposure can lie dormant for thirty or more years; they surface long after servicemen have left the Navy.
Many civilians were also exposed to asbestos at their places of employment, including people who worked in chemical plants, oil refineries, mines, power plants, smelters, various factories (especially automotive manufacturing facilities), construction sites, auto brake shops, railroads, and aerospace manufacturing plants.
Even ordinary household products have exposed people to friable asbestos. In New Orleans, Sharon Laurent recently filed suit against several corporations who manufactured products containing asbestos, which led to her contracting mesothelioma. She’s suing CRS Limited, Eagle Inc., Georgia-Pacific LLC and Taylor Seidenbach in the Orleans Parish Central District Court, for failing to warn her (and everyone else) of the hazards their products presented in the course of their normal and intended use; for the lack of safety instructions to eliminate or reduce the health risk associated with the use of their products; and for failing to inspect products to assure sufficiency and adequacy of warnings and safety precautions.
A little upriver from this case, another asbestos incident just made the news. In Columbia, Missouri, a fire raged through an apartment building, and a rainstorm afterward released trapped asbestos. Consequently, it’s too dangerous for residents to take back most of their possessions. A spokeswoman for the property owner also said none of residents of the building’s sixty-six apartments will be able to return for a long time.
