Without the use of cranes, work on construction sites, logging, the oil, and gas industry, and renewable energy fields would be impossible. All-terrain cranes are a type of crane with the equipment needed to travel on public roadways as well as on rough terrain on the job site, combining the best of both truck-mounted cranes and rough terrain cranes. These important pieces of machinery must be operated in a safe manner by trained professionals or serious and deadly accidents that can occur.

Causes of All-Terrain Crane Accidents

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) the vast majority of crane accidents (93%) are due to human error. OSHA requires all crane operators to be certified by an accredited certifying body such as The National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO) and employers are required to evaluate their crane operators according to specific criteria and a stipulated process. When an employer attempts to save time or cut corners by allowing an untrained employee to operate an all-terrain crane, or that equipment was used improperly and established safety procedures were not utilized, accidents can occur.

Other causes of all-terrain crane accidents include:
  • Electrical hazards – Nearly 45% of all crane accidents occur when the crane comes into contact with power-carrying lines. When an all-terrain crane is in use, the work area should be thoroughly inspected for electrical hazards such as overhead lines and power sources and these should be de-energized.
  • Falls and overturns – These accidents typically occur due to high winds, poor ground conditions, overloading, or improper loading. In the event of high winds, operations should be ceased until more favorable weather conditions occur.
  • Poor communication – All members of an all-terrain crane crew must be briefed on all parts of their jobs and all safety protocols should be followed to ensure that accidents do not occur.
  • Defective design/manufacture – A small number of crane accidents occur because of poor product design and/or manufacturing. If an accident was caused by defective design and/or manufacturing, the designer, manufacturer, and/or anyone involved in the chain of distribution of the defective product could be held liable.

Crane Accident Injuries

While each type of crane is different, they are all extremely heavy and can carry tremendous loads. Some of the most common types of all-terrain crane injuries can include:

  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Fractures
  • Lacerations
  • Amputation
  • Electrocution
  • Crushing injuries
  • Wrongful death

If you or a loved one has suffered injuries due to negligence on the job site or a defective product, an experienced personal injury lawyer can review your claim and determine if there were unsafe working conditions, potential OSHA violations, and other hazards that may have existed at the time of your accident. They will also determine who may be liable for your injuries and damages and what compensation you may be entitled to.
