The FDA recently released a warning about “aripiprazole” (brand name “Abilify,” marketed by Bristol-Myers Squibb), an antipsychotic drug prescribed for patients of schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, irritability associated with autism, and Tourette syndrome. According to the FDA, the use of Abilify has actually been correlated to “impulse-control problems” and “uncontrollable urges” for behaviors including binge-eating, sex, shopping, and gambling, urges which went away within weeks of the medicine being reduced or discontinued.
Although this problem is considered rare, all users of Abilify should understand these newly-found risks and stay up-to-date with the FDA’s new labeling requirements for the drug. The drug’s new warning labels are mandated by the FDA’s Safety Announcement of May 2016 and the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) has listed over 180 reports of compulsive behavior problems among users of Abilify who had never experienced such problems before the medication.
One problem which has already been noted on its labels as a side-effect is “pathological gambling,” and the newer labels are likely to provide warning of the other compulsive behaviors in question.
In addition to Abilify, aripiprazole is also sold under the brand names “Abilify Maintena” and “Aristada.”
