An accident Friday morning between a state truck and a passenger vehicle sent four people to local hospitals, according to police.

Katherine Williams, 88, was driving northbound on I-57 at about 10:30 am in the far right lane, according to Illinois State Police. Illinois Department of Transportation trucks were ahead patching pot holes, with three IDOT trucks with working lights and flashing arrow signs. The trucks were in the far right lane warning drivers to move left to avoid the patching area.

Williams passed the first two trucks with the arrow boards, each time getting back into the far right lane. She then hit the rear of the third IDOT truck.

Williams and a passenger, Rita Cyr, 89, were taken to Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Mattoon. Two other passengers, Shirley Meek, 86, and Helen Bridges, 93, were taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

Williams and Cyr were wearing seat belts but the other two passengers were not. All four women were released after receiving treatment for minor injuries. Williams was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
