3 Hurt in Separate Accidents on Sunday

Three people were injured Sunday in separate accidents, all handled by police officers from District 20 of the Illinois State Police.The first accident occurred at about 1 am in Adams County on Illinois 57 at County Road 1000 East. Joseph Whelan, 25, was transported to a hospital in Quincy with minor injuries. The man was driving a 2001 Ford truck and swerved to miss a deer, losing control of his vehicle.

He left the highway and overturned. He was ticketed for driving under the influence and possession of cannabis. Two other accidents happened on Interstate 72 in Pike County just 6 minutes and less than one mile apart.

Shirley Cartwright, 71, was taken to the Quincy hospital with minor injuries after losing control of her Jeep SUV at 4:00 pm. Her Jeep spun and hit the median before running off the road. She was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

April Azotea, 25, was taken to the hospital for moderate injuries when her Dodge truck ran off the road of the ice-covered road, hit a tree and overturned at about 4:06 pm. She was issued a citation for driving too fast for road conditions.
