2 Herscher Community Unit School District Students Injured in School Bus Accident
In the fourth such incident in two years, on Monday September 16th, 2013, two students – a 15-year-old girl and 9-year-old boy – were taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries after a car collided into the back of the Herscher Community Unit School District 2 bus they were riding on.
Two students — a 15-year-old girl and 9-year-old boy — were taken to the hospital with minor injuries after a car crashed into the back of a Herscher Community Unit School District 2 bus in west Kankakee on Monday afternoon. Both were treated and released shortly afterwards, according to Herscher transportation director Beth Wilcox,
The school bus was in the process of slowing down on Illinois Route 17, east of Pipeline Road and near Glazik Topline Feeds at around 345pm when it was rear ended by a Chevrolet passenger car. The driver of the car, 19 year old Deanna K. Perkins of Reddick, told police that she had been looking in her rear-view mirror at the time of the collision and failed to notice that the bus was slowing down. She said she hit the bus before she was able to brake to come to a full stop.
Perkins’ car sustained significant damage, but she refused treatment and it appeared, according to Angie Kinstner, a master sergeant for the state police, that the fact that Ms. Perkins was wearing a seat belt saved her life. She was ticketed by police for failing to slow down to avoid an accident. Of the 23 students that were on the bus at the time of the accident about half were collected from the scene by their parents while others were transported home on a different bus.
