An overuse injury is typically a muscle or joint injury that is caused by any repetitive action or movement. These are seen in sports with such movements such as rowing, as well as jobs requiring repetitive movements, which can even be a desk job caused by typing throughout the day. Symptoms of an overuse injury may be swelling, tenderness, redness, limited range of motion of the affected area, and impaired function of the affected area.

Overuse injuries are generally classified into four stages that describe the progression of the injury. Each stage describes a certain level of discomfort and the treatment and precautions that should be taken to treat it. These four stages are:

  • Stage 1 – The discomfort in the area disappears during warm-up. The injury should be identified at this point so that treatment can begin, but continuing this activity is permitted to a degree.
  • Stage 2 – The discomfort in the area may disappear during warm-up but then reappear by the end of the activity. Treatment continues.
  • Stage 3 – The discomfort worsens during the activity. If this occurs, the patient must stop participating in the activity.
  • Stage 4 – There is chronic pain and discomfort throughout the day. Treatment should continue and plenty of rest for a longer period of time is required.
