Whats the difference between strain and sprain?
A strain and sprain are somewhat similar but very different in the components that are affected and causing the pain. If you or a loved one has sustained a sprain or strain injury from an accident, contact 844 See Mike for a free consultation so we can help you recover from this experience and get fairly compensated.
A sprain affects the ligaments around your joints and it occurs after an impact or blow to a certain part of the body. Ligaments are the tough, fibrous bands of tissue that connect one bone to another bone in your joints. In this injury, the ligaments stretch or tear which can cause pain, bruising, redness, swelling, inability to put weight on the affected joint, and a limited range of motion. These are typically treated with rest, ice, some type of compression, and elevating the affected area. They may also require immobilization and rehabilitation in more severe cases. There are three levels of ankle sprains, specifically, since they are the most common type of sprain. They include the following:
- First degree – This occurs when the ligaments stretch but do not tear
- Second degree – This occurs when the ligaments partially tear
- Third-degree – This occurs when the ligaments are fully torn and likely made a popping sound at the time of injury. This includes the most severe degree of the symptoms mentioned above.
On the other hand, a strain affects the body’s muscles or tendons around your joints and it occurs typically after excessive weight or pressure is put on certain muscles of the body. Tendons are flexible, connective tissues that connect muscle to bone in the body. Strains occur when these muscles or tendons tear or overstretch. Symptoms of a strain involve pain, swelling, bruising, redness, limited range of motion, and weakness or stiffness when moving the affected area. There are three types of strains, ranging from mild to severe:
- Grade 1 (mild) – This occurs when the muscle overstretched and there are small tears.
- Grade 2 (moderate) – This occurs when the muscle or its tendon overstretched and there are more torn fibers than a mild strain. These are more painful and include more moderate symptoms than grade 1 strains.
- Grade 3 (severe) – This type of strain occurs when most of the muscle fibers are torn or there is a complete tear. This has the most severe degree of the symptoms mentioned above. They may also show deformity from the outside.
