Steam burns are a form of thermal burns caused by the vapor of hot boiling water. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), steam burns, and the similar scald burns, cause between 33-58% of the burn injuries that are seen in hospitals across the U.S. every year. Steam burns can occur in people of all ages, but children are at the highest risk for this type of injury and damage can occur within seconds of exposure to hot steam.

Steam Burn Symptoms

Water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit, which means the steam rising from boiling water is at an even higher temperature. This high temperature causes severe, often third-degree burns that are extremely painful and may require extensive medical treatment including hospitalization and skin grafts.

Common symptoms of steam burns include:

  • Reddening of the skin
  • Pain
  • Numbness
  • Blistering

In the event that the burn is extreme, the skin may turn white and become heavily blistered. Some extensive steam burns can also be fatal depending on their size, location, and complications.

Steam Burn Liability

Steam burns often occur due to the negligence of a caregiver. This may be a babysitter, nanny, daycare teacher, or anyone else that has a duty to provide reasonably safe care to a child. If a caregiver breaches that duty and your child suffers a steam burn injury, they could be held liable for their negligence.

If the burn injury occurred while at a daycare or other childcare provider, that entity may also be found liable under the theory of vicarious liability. Under vicarious liability, an employer could be held liable for the actions of their employee(s), especially if it can be shown that those employees were not properly hired or trained.

Finally, if a child suffers a steam burn while visiting family, friends, or they are visiting another premises or business, the homeowner or property owner could be held liable if their actions, inactions, or safety violations caused the burn.

If your child suffered a steam burn and you are unsure as to who may be liable for their injuries, an experienced personal injury lawyer can review your case and help you to secure the compensation you may be entitled to.
