What a “For-Profit” Facility Means
In November 2012, health inspectors from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services found that Medicare was being over-billed by the [for-profit] nursing home industry by a whopping $1.5 billion per year, and the extra money was made primarily on unnecessary treatments as well as treatments that patients never actually received.
The questionable revenue-generating and cost-cutting tactics of nursing homes result directly in residents being abused and neglected all over the United States, and this abuse can come in many forms. Unnecessary treatments are dangerous for anyone, but especially for elderly patients due to their physical conditions; many facilities do not properly train each and every staff member, leading some to make dangerous errors and deviations from standard care; some facilities do not conduct proper background checks of potential employees, even those who may have histories of abusive or violent behavior; many facilities are understaffed in the first place, which results in residents being neglected and places great stress on existing staff; and existing staff, many of whom are simply doing the best they can given their circumstances, are too often punished with reduced overtime and longer hours with lower wages for the benefit of the nursing home and its profits.
Although state and federal regulations exist for a variety of protocols in nursing homes, such as minimal staffing, nutritional requirements, and methods for providing medications, these problems still arise resulting from negligence, even the failure to meet required minimum standards of care. Inadequate staffing due to cost-cutting leads to a wide range of problems by itself, from medication errors to neglect and inadequate supervision, and patients can suffer from serious injuries and illnesses, dehydration/malnutrition, and even death when a nursing home does not fulfill its legal responsibilities to provide adequate care to all its residents.
