Medical Negligence and Fetal Macrosomia
Not all birth defects and complications result directly from the negligence of a health care professional, but even in these cases, failure to diagnose a particular condition – especially in a newborn baby – can also qualify as medical negligence. If you and/or your child have been a victim of medical negligence, speak with an experienced personal injury attorney as soon as possible.

“Fetal macrosomia” describes a condition resulting in a newborn baby being far above-average in size and weight; it affects about 9% of newborn babies worldwide and refers to a birth-weight exceeding 8 pounds and 13 ounces. Large babies are often a sign of good health, but serious complications can result when a newborn baby is too large.
And common symptoms of fetal macrosomia include:
– Above-average fundal height – “Fundal height” measures from the pubic bone to the top of the uterus in the mother and is used to accurately predict fetal size starting about halfway through the pregnancy.
– Excessive amniotic fluid –Amniotic fluid, which surrounds and protects the fetus during pregnancy, can be increased by a larger-than-average fetus due to above-average urine output and can be a sign of fetal macrosomia.
Risks of fetal macrosomia include: a potential need for a Caesarean section; “shoulder dystocia,” in which the baby’s shoulders obstruct during delivery; “birth asphyxia,” in which the baby suffocates during a delayed and obstructed delivery; or more commonly, fractured clavicles and nerve-damage in the brachial plexus (a nerve-network which supplies nerve-fibers to the chest, hands, arms, and shoulders).
