Chicago can be a place of high traffic and busy intersections, and we’d like to offer some tips to stay aware of your surroundings and minimize the risks of a traffic accident:

  • Check your mirrors frequently – It’s always important to be aware of all vehicles around you on the road as well as any pedestrians. Be sure to remember your blind spots and check the mirrors before turning braking, or switching lanes.
  • Use your turn signals – You are obligated to inform drivers around you when you are turning or changing lanes, and failure to do so can result in an accident, be it a sideswipe, rear-end, or head-on with an oncoming vehicle.
  • Don’t tailgate – Tailgating is one of the quickest ways to cause an accident for which you would be legally liable. Always allow appropriate space between you and the vehicle in front of you, and never let your emotions get the best of you, or you may suffer the consequences.
  • Don’t get distracted – Distracted driving is one of the most common – and preventable – causes of auto accidents, so put your phone away and stay focused to avoid being at fault for an accident.
  • Be defensive – Defensive driving simply describes the ability to anticipate potentially dangerous situations on the road. This involves precautions such as keeping your eyes on the road and following the “three-second rule” referring to the distance kept between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead.
  • Obey speed limits – There are reasons why speed limits vary so greatly depending on the setting, and speed limits are usually lower in high-traffic and residential areas due to a higher presence of pedestrians. Avoid excessive speeding no matter where you are to maintain constant control of your vehicle.
  • Be extra cautious in poor weather conditions – Whether it’s the rain of spring and summer or the snow of winter, take the necessary precautions to ensure a smooth ride. Always make sure your windshield wipers are working properly; replace your tires or switch them with snow tires during the winter if you are concerned about a lack of traction, and always maintain a safe speed during rainstorms and snowstorms.
