Decatur, located in central Illinois and home to about 72,000 people, has been named one of the country’s “Top 25 Trade Cities” and is home to three railway connections as well as an inland port, making it a prominent transportation hub in the region. While the surrounding area is known for scenic views, farmlands, and smooth roads, motorcyclists should also be mindful of slow-moving trucks, tractors, and farm equipment that can obstruct the road at unexpected times.

Here are some examples of motorcycle accidents in the Decatur area in recent years:

  • In April 2014, at the intersection of Oakley and Ravina Park, a pickup truck was attempting to turn left onto Ravina when it was rear-ended by a motorcyclist; witnesses said the motorcyclist had been speeding and swerving around other vehicles just prior to the accident. The motorcyclist succumbed to his injuries.
  • In June 2015, on Route 48 near Cundiff Road, an accident occurred around midnight which involved two motorcycles and one vehicle. The accident resulted in two fatalities, both residents of Macon County.

Motorcyclists are far more vulnerable than automobile-passengers when accidents occur, and these accidents often result in serious injuries and even death.

Along the Sangamon River and Lake Decatur is is the largest city in Macon County with about 76,000 residents – Decatur. It is located in Central Illinois and sometimes known as the “Soybean Capital of the World” for the major agricultural companies that belong there. Decatur has its own airport, bus system, and two universities, which make for some busy roads at times.

Here are some recent motorcycle accidents in the Decatur area:

  • In June of 2019, a 67-year-old man died in a motorcycle accident as he swerved off of the road to avoid hitting a deer that suddenly appeared on the road. He rode his motorcycle and hit a concrete culvert which caused him to be ejected from the motorcycle into a pool of standing water. Soon after arriving at the emergency room, he was pronounced dead.
  • In June of 2017, a 21-year-old motorcyclist died after crashing into the side of a car that was at a stop. Surgeons worked throughout the night to attempt to save him, but his internal injuries could not be helped as he died in the middle of the surgery.
