Window Cord Choking – Child Injuries & Accidents
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) window blinds and window shades that come with cords are one of the top five hidden household dangers to children. Between 1990 and 2015, over 16,000 children have been treated in emergency rooms for injuries related to window cords-an average of two children every day. Strangulation is the most common injury due to window cords, but window cords pose a choking hazard to children as well, especially with younger children who tend to put almost anything into their mouths.

Preventing Window Cord Choking Accidents
Child-proofing the home is one of the most important steps a parent can take to keep their child safe. Parents should ensure that cribs, furniture, and toys are placed well away from windows with window cords and blinds to prevent strangulation. In addition, parents should also do the following:
- Use a cord cleat to keep window cords out of reach.
- Use window cord “wind-up’s” or window cord shorteners to keep cords from hanging down.
- Ensure that your window blinds have tension devices to keep window cords taut.
- Use safety tassels to prevent a child from becoming entangled in the window cord.
Legal Liability in Cord Choking Accidents
Each window cord choking case will be unique, but generally, parents or legal guardians can pursue compensation against a negligent caregiver and/or the manufacturer of the window blinds if it can be shown that their product was defective or dangerous under product liability laws.
If a child suffers a cord choking incident and is injured, the individual or institution that was responsible for their care could be found liable for their injuries due to negligent supervision, especially if it can be shown that that dangerous window cords were left within reach of small hands.
The dangers of window cords are well known to window covering manufacturers. While window treatment manufacturers have been following voluntary standards since 2018 to only sell safer window blinds in a retail setting, defective and dangerous parts on window blinds can still cause choking accidents. If a defective part was determined to be the cause of cord choking injuries, the window blind manufacturer, the parts maker, and anyone in the chain of distribution could be held liable for the damages sustained.
If your child was injured as a result of window cord choking, you may be entitled to compensation for their injuries.
