Car accidents can be very traumatizing accidents that can take a heavy physical, mental, and financial toll on the victims. Back injuries are fairly common after a car accident. There are many different types of back injuries and they can range from mild to very severe. A mild back injury may be a mild case of whiplash, while a severe one would be spinal cord injury which can result in quadriplegia (paralysis of all four limbs and torso).

Back pain after a car accident is often due to the impact of the blow to your back during a collision. If another driver collided with your car, your neck may have been jerked back-and-forth to cause whiplash. Or, it may have caused a back strain, sprain, or cervical fracture from the impact. These all cause back pain, weakness, and stiffness. The most common area in which back pain is located in the lower back.

The impact also may have shifted one of your intervertebral disks, resulting in a herniated disk. This type of injury can cause nerve damage and sharp back pains. Perhaps the most severe type of injury to the back is a spinal cord injury, which occurs when there is some type of damage to the spinal cord from a high-energy trauma to the back. This can result in loss of sensation, loss of mobility, paralysis, and much more depending on the severity.

No matter what type of injury or degree of pain that you experience, you should seek immediate medical attention. This is in order to treat any conditions that may have delayed symptoms because it could worsen in the time between the accident and you actually recognizing the symptoms. Also, you should not wait to get treated because further movement could agitate and worsen the injury. After your initial treatment, you should contact an accident lawyer to handle a claim where you can be compensated for the damages that you experienced.

If another person caused your injuries, you can file a claim against them for monetary damages.
