Each year there are over 15 million trucks on America’s roadways transporting 70% of the products we use daily. According to the Large Truck Crash Causation Study (LTCCS) conducted by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), large truck accidents have increased, spiking 20% over the past 10 years.

The LTCCS analyzed data from 120,000 commercial trucking accidents over a 33-month period where almost 75% of the accidents involved more than one vehicle. In 68,000 of these accidents, or 57%, the truck driver was at fault.

There were four main reasons as to why the driver of the truck was at fault, including:

  • Decision making-The LTCCS defined decision making as the driver driving too closely to other vehicles, speeding, or misjudging the speed of other vehicles. 30,000 accidents were due to decision making of the truck driver.
  • Recognition-Recognition is defined by the LTCCS as distracted driving, inattention to the road, or failing to recognize a situation that required their attention. 22,000 accidents were due to recognition.
  • Non-performance of the driver-Non-performance is defined as the truck driver falling asleep, suffering a medical emergency, or suffering an impairment while driving. Non-performance issues caused 9,000 accidents.
  • Performance of the driver-Panicking, overcompensating while driving, and not utilizing good control of their vehicle is defined by the LTCCS as performance of the driver and was the cause of 7,000 accidents.
