What Makes Dogs Bite?
Dogs are amazing and really are our best friends. However, on occasion, even the most wonderful dog can bite. No matter what age, gender, or breed, any dog can bite. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the majority of dog bites are due to the dog reacting to an outside stimulus. If a dog is in a stressful situation and feels provoked, they will react in the best way they know how, by biting.
Dogs will also bite if they have been scared or startled, hence the saying, “Let sleeping dogs lie”. It is important for parents to supervise any interactions between dogs and small children, especially if the dog is sleeping.
If a dog is protecting something, such as her puppies, food, treats, toys, or the owner’s property, the dog may also bite. Again, supervision is always important when a young child is around dogs, especially if they are dogs that the children are unfamiliar with.
It is also common for a dog that is older, sick, or in pain to bite when they want to be left alone. If your dog is normally happy-go-lucky and suddenly begins to snap, a trip to the veterinarian is warranted for the safety of others and the health and wellness of your dog.
Finally, dogs may bite when overly excited, such as meeting new people or during playtime. To avoid nips and bites, the AVMA recommends not playing tug-of-war or wrestling with your dog, especially if they tend to get hyper or aggressive.
Preventing Dog Bites
– Parents should stress to their children to never approach a strange dog
– Never attempt to take anything from the mouth of a dog
– If your small child is going to be around a dog, make sure they are completely supervised at all times.
– The AVMA also recommends that all dogs remain on leash while in public and that the owners start socialization when the dog is young to introduce them to a wide variety of situations, people, and other animals.
