The spinal cord is one of the most essential components in our body structure. It houses part of the central nervous system (CNS), which aids us with our reflexes, sensory processing, and many more functions relevant to our daily life. The spinal cord also supports our neck and head as well as keeping us upright and straight as a whole. A spinal cord injury is when some damage or fracture to the spinal cord affects its structure and function, and it can be extremely debilitating and life-changing. This is because it can affect the CNS which is in charge of motor and sensory function.
Currently, there is no cure for spinal cord injuries. There is plenty of research that is going into possible solutions and cures, though. The treatment options for spinal cord injury survivors includes a variety of solutions with a few goals in mind. Treatment should reduce pain, pressure, swelling, and inflammation; it should work to decompress, immobilize, and stabilize the spine; it should work to strengthen your muscles and range of motion; and it should be implemented early, as in immediately after an accident or trauma, in order to begin the recovery process promptly. Nerve tissue can die very quickly, so the first 48 hours after the injury are widely considered the most important time period for these injuries.
Treatment options will vary according to the patient’s age, previous medical history, pre-existing conditions, location of the injury, and severity of the injury. Some common treatments for spinal cord injuries include the following:
  • Anti-inflammatory medications such as methylprednisolone
  • Neck collars or back braces to immobilize the spine
  • Surgery to clean up, repair, and stabilize the area
  • Stem cell therapy to help cells survive the injury
  • Physical therapy to regain strength and mobility
  • Occupational therapy to recover function and skills lost due to the injury
