The spinal cord allows the brain to communicate with other parts of the body, and damage to the spinal cord can interrupt this communication, which may result in the loss of feeling and/or mobility below the place of damage and lead to lifelong debilitations. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that between 12,000 and 20,000 spinal cord injuries (SCIs) occur each year in the United States, and the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center estimated that about 237,000 Americans were living with SCIs as of 2013. Fortunately, SCI victims may be eligible for financial compensation from those responsible for their injuries, and it is important to consult with an experienced personal injury attorney as soon as possible to establish a claim. SCIs occur due to pressure, damage, or trauma to the spinal cord. The spinal column is made up of 31 vertically-stacked vertebrae, and SCIs are generally divided into two main categories:

  • Complete SCIs – Injuries which result in complete loss of function below the exact point of damage
  • Incomplete SCIs – Injuries which leave the victim with some feeling and mobility below the point of damage and offer greater chances of improvement and recovery than complete SCIs

Spinal cord injuries can occur in a wide range of accidents, including:

  • Aviation accidents
  • Boating accidents
  • Medical malpractice
  • Traffic accidents
  • Slip-and-falls
  • Sports injuries
  • Workplace accidents

In Illinois, injury victims have up to two (2) years to file a personal injury claim. However, it is imperative to speak with an attorney as soon as possible following the accident to determine your case’s worth and what can be done to receive compensation.
