Three people, including a seven-year-old, were transported to OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria on Friday morning following a two-car accident near Bardolph.
According to Illinois State Police District 14 in Macomb, a 2013 Honda Pilot, driven by 48-year-old Bridgett Mitchell, was driving west on Illinois Route 95 when it reached a stop sign at the intersection with Illinois Route 41, proceeding into the path of a 2014 Mack Truck, driven by 50-year-old Michael Redington.
The truck, which was pulling am empty tanker trailer, struck the Honda on the driver’s side and the Honda came to rest in the northwest corner of the intersection. The truck continued on 41, crossed into the southbound lane, and entered a ditch.
Several residents watched as authorities waited for life flights to transport the three victims. Most witnesses spoke about how dangerous the intersection has seemed, and one questioned whether it was possible to petition for it to be a four-way stop instead or have a stop light.
“I’ve lived here for a year, and I’ve seen at least five [accidents],” said resident Jennifer Bradley. Mitchell, of Calumet City, a 7-year-old and Cary Johnson, 83, of Chicago were all injured in the Honda and taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
The cause of the crash was determined to be failure to yield at a stop sign, with charges pending. All involved were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.
