Truck rollovers occur when a truck’s wheels lose contact with the roadway and the truck ends up on its side or completely upside-down. Trucks are prone to this occurring because they have such a high center of gravity which causes a truck to lean into a curve or turn. When this is combined with top-heavy or unstable loads, truck rollover accidents can have devastating consequences.

There are many causes of truck rollover accidents but according to The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) there are four causes that are most common, which include:

  • Speeding-When a truck driver is driving too fast it becomes more difficult to negotiate curves in the roadway. To safely negotiate curves, a truck driver needs to consider the height of his truck, the size of his load, conditions of the road, and the configuration of the curve. Studies have found that 45% of rollover crashes are caused by a truck driver speeding.
  • Driver error-According to a study done by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), approximately 78% of truck rollover accidents involve driver error in situations such as speeding, driving while distracted, driving while fatigued, driving while under the influence of a substance, or inexperience.
  • Steering changes-If a driver makes a sudden change in steering, such as to avoid an obstacle in the road, to avoid another vehicle, or when they are changing the type of road they are driving on, oversteering and the truck’s high center of gravity can cause a rollover.
  • Improper loads-A truck’s cargo can be improperly loaded, overloaded, or can shift while a driver is turning their truck. An improperly loaded truck combined with a high center of gravity can cause a truck to lose its balance.
