Toyota Recall
Toyota has just announced it is recalling 907,000 cars, mainly Corollas; their air bags are improperly inflating, when the vehicle’s electronic signals damage a chip in the part that controls them. Toyota is also recalling 385,000 Lexus IS luxury cars, because their wipers can get stuck in heavy snowfall. Toyota first announced there had been no accidents; a few days after that, a spokesperson for the company confirmed there were two crashes in the US related to the air bag problem. The company also confirmed that the faulty air bags had resulted in 18 injuries; all told, there were with 46 reported problems in North America and one in Japan, and 25 reported problems with the Lexus windshield wipers.
Toyota explained that faulty circuit boards in the Corolla and Corolla Matrix, which control the supplemental restraint system (including the air bags) could be to blame. If the circuit board malfunctions, it shorts out, which creates a buildup of heat, potentially causing the air bags or seat belt pretensioners to deploy when there hasn’t been a crash. With Lexus IS, the problem is a loose nut, which makes the wipers fail under pressure, such as the buildup of heavy snow.
Toyota has seen a lot of large recalls in recent years, and has paid record federal fines for not pulling the vehicles quickly enough. The current recalls began with an investigation last August, when the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration asked all major automakers for information on air bag malfunctions (in response to failure of Chrysler Jeep Liberty SUVs’ chip).
