Car accidents, though unintentional, occur for a variety of reasons, and many are attributed to weather conditions, a wide range of distractions both inside and outside of cars, and intoxicated driving. Ultimately, they may be caused by only one of two sets of factors: those which were human-caused and preventable, or those which were beyond the drivers’ control.

Here are three important tips to reduce the risk of an accident:

1) Alert the police of reckless driving.

If you witness someone driving recklessly or suspect that he/she is intoxicated, do not hesitate to contact the police. Doing so can certainly prevent a potential accident and even save lives. If someone is driving so erratically that you, as another driver, is aware of it, something may certainly be wrong and the possibility should not be ignored.

2) Keep all external factors in mind.

If inclement weather is expected, especially in the winter, be sure to plan accordingly and watch your speed on the road. In rain or snow, or if roads are icy, keep a safe distance between your car and the car in front of you and avoid switching lanes unexpectedly.

3) Enforce basic rules within your own vehicle.

Make sure that your passengers understand basic safety rules (not just wearing seatbelts!). Always keep the radio at a reasonable volume, at least so that important outside noises, such as ambulances and other emergency vehicles, can be heard. If you have children, make sure they have something to keep them occupied for longer rides, such as a book or a portable DVD player built into your vehicle. If you are a passenger, do your best to ensure that the driver does not use their cell phone while driving, except in extreme circumstances.
