Two young people were airlifted to a nearby hospital after a car accident in McDonough County on Saturday, October 5. According to Illinois State Police, an SUV was driving westbound on Illinois Route 9 at E. 750th Street when its 17-year-old driver stopped quickly to avoid hitting a small animal.

The driver of a vehicle behind the SUV swerved to avoid a collision, by the 17-year-old driver of the car ended up in the eastbound lane and struck an oncoming car. The 53-year-old driver of the oncoming car and a passenger from the vehicle were taken to a hospital and later released.

Investigators say that the two young people from the car that swerved into the left lane had to be airlifted after they were extricated from their car, and their conditions were unknown.

Police say all occupants were wearing seat belts and there was no alcohol involved in the accident. The driver of the car that hit the oncoming car was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident as well as improper lane usage.
